The Best Email Marketing Software for Small Business in 2026
Email platforms bill by contacts, not by value delivered — so a list that triples can triple your bill without sending one extra campaign. The cheapest platform for you depends entirely on your send frequency.

Almost every email marketing comparison ranks platforms by features. That is the wrong axis. At small-business scale the platforms are close enough on capability that the feature gaps rarely decide anything — but the billing models are structurally different, and the wrong one can double your cost for identical output.
There are two models. Contact-based (Mailchimp, Klaviyo): you pay for how many people you store, and unlimited or near-unlimited sends. Send-based (Brevo): you store unlimited contacts and pay for emails dispatched.
The shortlist
| Tool | Score | Entry price | Free plan | Best for | Link |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brevo | 8.2 /10 | $9 Unlimited contacts | Yes | Businesses with large but infrequently mailed lists, or anyone sending transactional and marketing email together. | Visit site |
| Klaviyo | 8.4 /10 | $20 500 contacts | Yes | Ecommerce stores past roughly $20k/month where email should be 25–35 % of revenue. | Visit site |
| Mailchimp | 7.9 /10 | $13 500 contacts | Yes | Newsletters and simple campaign sending where design speed beats automation depth. | Visit site |
Prices are list prices in USD, billed monthly, verified between October 5, 2026 and October 5, 2026. Annual billing typically cuts 10–20 %.
Work out which billing model fits you
Take one number: emails sent per contact per month. Divide your monthly send volume by your list size. Then:
- Under 2 — you have a large list you mail occasionally. Send-based pricing (Brevo) is dramatically cheaper. A 40,000-contact list mailed twice a month is 80,000 sends: $74/month on Brevo Starter ($119 on Standard, with automation), against $340–410 on Mailchimp.
- 2 to 8 — Brevo is still cheaper, but the gap narrows steadily. Decide on whether the saving is worth the editor and integrations you give up.
- Over 10 — you mail heavily, with automation firing continuously. Around 10 sends per contact the two meet; beyond that contact-based pricing is cheaper and definitely simpler to forecast.
Same list, same send frequency — 80,000 emails a month either way. List prices read from each vendor's pricing page in October 2026, billed monthly; Starter and Essentials are each vendor's entry plan, Standard on both adds automation. The gap is the billing model, not features: Brevo charges for what you send, Mailchimp for what you store. It widens every month the list grows and stays roughly flat if it does not.
1. Brevo — best value for most small businesses
What works
- Send-based pricing means a dormant list costs nothing to keep
- Transactional email, SMS and marketing campaigns share one account and one sending reputation
- Free tier allows unlimited contacts — unique among serious platforms
- EU-based with straightforward GDPR posture
What doesn't
- Template library and editor feel a generation behind Mailchimp
- Automation builder is capable but visibly less refined than Klaviyo's
- Fewer native integrations; expect to use Zapier for long-tail tools
The billing model — priced on send volume rather than contact count — is the real differentiator, and it's a genuinely good fit for a large list that sends occasionally, or for transactional email and SMS/WhatsApp together. The template designer is a clear step down from Mailchimp or Klaviyo, visually.— Andrew Chase, Founder · 17+ years as a Project Manager
Skip it if: Your team judges a platform by the polish of its editor.
Brevo's send-based model is the single most underrated pricing structure in this category. Unlimited contacts on every plan, including the free one. You pay for what you dispatch.
The strategic effect is that list growth stops being a cost. On contact-based pricing, every new subscriber increases your bill whether or not you ever mail them — which quietly discourages the lead capture your business needs. On Brevo it does not, so you can run aggressive list building without a rising invoice.
The second advantage is consolidation: transactional email (receipts, password resets), SMS and marketing campaigns run through one account and one sending reputation. Most businesses pay for a separate transactional provider without ever comparing.
The trade-off is polish. The template editor and library feel a generation behind Mailchimp, and the automation builder — while genuinely capable — is less refined than Klaviyo's. Native integrations are fewer, so expect Zapier for long-tail tools.

2. Klaviyo — best if you sell products
What works
- Every flow reports attributed revenue — the clearest ROI picture in email software
- Segmentation runs on full ecommerce event history, not just tags
- Predictive analytics (CLV, churn risk, next order date) included at standard pricing
- Shopify and WooCommerce integrations are deep, not superficial
What doesn't
- Gets expensive fast for content businesses that do not sell products
- Steeper learning curve than Mailchimp for a first-time email owner
- Template editing is more constrained than dedicated design-first tools
For ecommerce, especially on Shopify, Klaviyo's behaviour-based segmentation and revenue attribution are in a different league — surgical is the right word. It's also genuinely expensive, and if your list is growing without a clear monetisation plan behind it, it will quietly eat your margin.— Andrew Chase, Founder · 17+ years as a Project Manager
Skip it if: You run a media or B2B newsletter with no purchase events to segment on.
If you have purchase events, Klaviyo is a different class of tool. Segments run on full order and browse history rather than tags, every flow reports attributed revenue, and predictive metrics like expected next order date come standard.
It is also the priciest option here once a list passes about 10,000 contacts — 11 % above Mailchimp Standard at 10,000 and 60 % above at 50,000 — though up to 5,000 contacts it costs no more than Mailchimp's automation plan. For a store past about $20k/month that is recovered easily; below that it is a real cost with a delayed payoff. Our full Mailchimp vs Klaviyo breakdown has the cost curves.
If you do not sell products, skip it. Klaviyo without purchase events is a general-purpose email tool at a premium price, and its entire advantage sits idle.

3. Mailchimp — best for design speed and integrations
What works
- Template editor and asset library remain the friendliest for non-designers
- Integration coverage is close to universal across ecommerce and CMS platforms
- Reporting is clear enough that a founder can act on it without a marketer
- Deliverability at default settings is reliably good
What doesn't
- Bills on total contacts including unsubscribed profiles unless you actively clean
- Automation depth trails Klaviyo and ActiveCampaign at every comparable price
- Price steps up hard past 10,000 contacts — Standard goes from $135 to $230 at 15,000
Mailchimp still wins on brand recognition and ease of use for a simple newsletter or a straightforward campaign. Where it's fallen behind is automation depth against newer competitors, and the pricing has climbed noticeably while the product hasn't kept pace.— Andrew Chase, Founder · 17+ years as a Project Manager
Skip it if: Your revenue depends on behavioural, product-triggered flows.
Mailchimp remains the default for a reason: it is the easiest platform on which a non-marketer can produce an email that looks professional, and it connects to almost every website, store and CRM in existence.
It is no longer the value choice. Contact-based billing that counts unsubscribed profiles, plus a steep step past 10,000 contacts ($135 to $230 on Standard), means many Mailchimp accounts are paying for capacity they cannot use. If you have been on it for years without auditing, start by archiving unsubscribed contacts — that alone often cuts a tier.
Choose it when the person building emails values a good editor over a good price, or when your integration requirements are unusual.

Things that matter more than your platform choice
Four practices will do more for your email results than any migration. If you have not done these, do them before you shop.
- Authenticate your domain. SPF, DKIM and a DMARC policy. Since the 2024 bulk-sender requirements at Gmail and Yahoo, this is the difference between the inbox and the void. Every platform here documents it; most people skip it.
- Suppress the dead. Anyone who has not opened in 6–12 months should be suppressed. This improves deliverability for everyone else and cuts your bill on contact-based pricing. It feels like losing an audience; you lost them already.
- Send from a person. A real name in the From field outperforms a company name consistently. It costs nothing to change.
- Build one automation before your next campaign. A welcome sequence typically outperforms every broadcast you send, because it reaches people at peak interest. Most small businesses have none.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest email marketing software for a big list?
Brevo, by a wide margin, because it bills on emails sent rather than contacts stored. A 40,000-contact list mailed twice a month is 80,000 sends — roughly $74/month on Brevo Starter against $340–410 on Mailchimp. The saving grows with every subscriber.
Is free email marketing software good enough to start?
Yes, for a real period. Brevo's free plan allows unlimited contacts and 300 emails a day (about 9,000 a month), Mailchimp gives 250 contacts and 500 sends, and Klaviyo gives 250 contacts and 500 sends with campaign revenue attribution built in. Most businesses should not pay for email until they have a working welcome sequence and a list past a few thousand.
How do I move platforms without losing subscribers?
Export contacts with their consent date and source, import to the new platform, and keep both running for two weeks while you verify deliverability on the new sending domain. Warm up gradually — send to your most engaged segment first, then widen. Automations always have to be rebuilt; treat that as a chance to improve them rather than replicate them.
Does email marketing still work in 2026?
It remains the highest-margin channel available to a small business, mainly because you own the list — no algorithm sits between you and the audience. What has changed is tolerance: authentication is now enforced, one-click unsubscribe is required, and untargeted broadcasting to a cold list performs badly. The channel works; the 2015 tactics do not.
Should I use my CRM's built-in email instead?
For simple follow-ups, yes — it is one less system. For campaigns and lifecycle automation, bundled CRM email is usually a tier below a dedicated platform in deliverability tooling, template quality and reporting. If email drives meaningful revenue, keep them separate. See our CRM comparison for how the bundles compare.
