Mailchimp vs Klaviyo: Which Is Better in 2026?
On price alone the two are closer than their reputations suggest: Klaviyo matches or undercuts Mailchimp's automation plan up to about 5,000 contacts, then runs 11–60 % higher as the list grows. Whether that premium pays for itself comes down to one thing — whether you sell products. The dividing line is sharper than most comparisons admit.

This comparison usually gets framed as "beginner tool versus advanced tool." That framing is wrong and it costs people money. Mailchimp and Klaviyo are built around different assumptions about what an email address is.
Mailchimp treats a contact as a person on a list, described by tags and fields. Klaviyo treats a contact as a person with an event history — what they viewed, added to cart, bought, when, and how often. Every practical difference follows from that.
Head to head
| Tool | Score | Entry price | Free plan | Link |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Klaviyo | 8.4 /10 | $20 500 contacts | Yes | Visit site |
| Mailchimp | 7.9 /10 | $13 500 contacts | Yes | Visit site |
Prices are list prices in USD, billed monthly, verified between October 5, 2026 and October 5, 2026. Annual billing typically cuts 10–20 %.
Cost as your list grows
Both platforms bill by contact count, and both get materially more expensive as your list grows. Here is the shape of the curve, which is the thing to understand before you commit:
List prices read from both vendors' pricing pages in October 2026, USD, billed monthly. Mailchimp Standard prices by contact band — these points sit in the 501–1,500, 5,001–10,000 and 40,001–50,000 bands. Its cheaper Essentials plan, which limits each automation to four steps, costs $26.50, $110 and $385 at the same sizes. Klaviyo prices by active profiles, in steps. Both vendors adjust these regularly — confirm before budgeting.
Against Standard, Klaviyo is cheaper at 1,000 contacts ($30 against $45), level at 5,000 ($100 each), about 11 % more expensive at 10,000 and 60 % more expensive at 50,000. Against the cut-down Essentials plan the premium is larger — 13 % at 1,000 contacts, 36 % at 10,000, 87 % at 50,000 — but Essentials is not what a store running behavioural flows would buy. The premium is the number people react to, and it is the wrong number to react to on its own.
Where Klaviyo is genuinely better
Revenue attribution on every flow
Klaviyo reports attributed revenue per flow, per message, per variant. You can see that your browse-abandonment sequence produced $4,200 last month and that message three in it produced almost none. That turns email from a cost centre with open rates into a channel with a P&L, and it changes what you work on.
Mailchimp reports opens, clicks and — with an ecommerce integration — some revenue data. It is real but coarser, and it does not attribute cleanly down to individual messages within a long automation.
Segmentation on behaviour, not tags
A Klaviyo segment can be: bought at least twice, last order over 60 days ago, never used a discount code, viewed the category in the last week. That segment builds itself and updates continuously. Reproducing it in Mailchimp means maintaining tags, which means writing automations whose only job is to keep tags accurate — work that quietly consumes an hour a week and drifts out of sync anyway.
Predictive analytics included
Predicted customer lifetime value, churn risk and expected next order date come standard rather than as an enterprise add-on. Whether you use them is another matter, but "email everyone whose next order is overdue" is a genuinely valuable campaign that Mailchimp cannot express.
Where Mailchimp is genuinely better
Design speed for non-designers
Mailchimp's editor, template library and content studio remain the friendliest in the category. If the person building your emails is a founder or an office manager rather than a marketer, this is a real advantage and it shows up as campaigns actually going out.
Integration coverage
Mailchimp connects to almost everything. Klaviyo is deep on Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce and thinner elsewhere. If your stack is not ecommerce-shaped, Mailchimp will fit it with less friction.
It is cheaper once your list grows, and for many businesses that is the answer
If you run a newsletter, a local services business, a B2B company with a long sales cycle, or an agency mailing clients, you have no purchase events to segment on. Klaviyo's entire advantage evaporates and, past 10,000 contacts, you are paying 11–60 % more for analytics that will read zero. In that situation Mailchimp is the better product — and Brevo is often better still, because it bills by sends rather than contacts.
Klaviyo: the scorecard
What works
- Every flow reports attributed revenue — the clearest ROI picture in email software
- Segmentation runs on full ecommerce event history, not just tags
- Predictive analytics (CLV, churn risk, next order date) included at standard pricing
- Shopify and WooCommerce integrations are deep, not superficial
What doesn't
- Gets expensive fast for content businesses that do not sell products
- Steeper learning curve than Mailchimp for a first-time email owner
- Template editing is more constrained than dedicated design-first tools
For ecommerce, especially on Shopify, Klaviyo's behaviour-based segmentation and revenue attribution are in a different league — surgical is the right word. It's also genuinely expensive, and if your list is growing without a clear monetisation plan behind it, it will quietly eat your margin.— Andrew Chase, Founder · 17+ years as a Project Manager
Skip it if: You run a media or B2B newsletter with no purchase events to segment on.
Mailchimp: the scorecard
What works
- Template editor and asset library remain the friendliest for non-designers
- Integration coverage is close to universal across ecommerce and CMS platforms
- Reporting is clear enough that a founder can act on it without a marketer
- Deliverability at default settings is reliably good
What doesn't
- Bills on total contacts including unsubscribed profiles unless you actively clean
- Automation depth trails Klaviyo and ActiveCampaign at every comparable price
- Price steps up hard past 10,000 contacts — Standard goes from $135 to $230 at 15,000
Mailchimp still wins on brand recognition and ease of use for a simple newsletter or a straightforward campaign. Where it's fallen behind is automation depth against newer competitors, and the pricing has climbed noticeably while the product hasn't kept pace.— Andrew Chase, Founder · 17+ years as a Project Manager
Skip it if: Your revenue depends on behavioural, product-triggered flows.
A note on deliverability
Both platforms are frequently marketed on deliverability. In practice, at default settings, neither has a meaningful edge for a legitimate sender with a clean list. Deliverability is overwhelmingly determined by things you control:
- Authentication — SPF, DKIM and a DMARC policy on your sending domain. Non-negotiable since the 2024 bulk-sender requirements at Gmail and Yahoo.
- List hygiene — suppress anyone who has not opened in 6–12 months. This single practice does more for inbox placement than any platform choice.
- Consent quality — where the address came from, and whether the person remembers giving it.
- Send consistency — a dormant list mailed suddenly performs badly regardless of vendor.
If someone is selling you a platform primarily on deliverability, they are selling you the part you already control.
The verdict
One question decides it: do you have purchase events?
- Yes, and you are past roughly $20k/month in sales: Klaviyo. The attribution alone changes how you work, and the price difference is recovered quickly.
- Yes, but you are earlier than that: start on Klaviyo's free tier (250 contacts, 500 sends a month) and grow into it — up to about 5,000 contacts its paid plan costs no more than Mailchimp's. Migrating later is painful because flows do not transfer.
- No purchase events: Mailchimp if design speed matters most, Brevo if you have a large list you mail infrequently. Klaviyo is the wrong tool, and past 10,000 contacts a more expensive one.
Frequently asked questions
Is Klaviyo worth the extra cost over Mailchimp?
For ecommerce, almost always — and up to about 5,000 contacts there is no extra cost at all, because Klaviyo's paid plan costs the same as Mailchimp Standard or less. Past 10,000 contacts the premium runs from 11 % to 60 % at 50,000, but email typically drives 25–35 % of revenue for a well-run store, and per-flow revenue attribution is what lets you find and fix the underperforming half. For a business with no purchase events, the extra cost buys analytics that will show zero — there, it is not worth it.
Can I migrate from Mailchimp to Klaviyo?
Contacts, tags and campaign history migrate through Klaviyo's built-in importer, and it works well. Automations do not — Klaviyo flows are structurally different and must be rebuilt. Budget a week for a store with several active automations, and rebuild rather than replicate: the Klaviyo version should use behavioural triggers Mailchimp could not express.
Does Mailchimp charge for unsubscribed contacts?
On most current plans, unsubscribed and non-subscribed profiles still count toward your contact total unless you archive them. Archiving is a manual action. Many accounts are paying for several thousand contacts they can never legally email — auditing this is usually the fastest way to cut a Mailchimp bill.
Which is better for a Shopify store?
Klaviyo, clearly. The Shopify integration syncs full order and browse history rather than a summary, which is what makes behavioural segmentation and accurate revenue attribution possible. Mailchimp's Shopify integration works, but it passes less data and the segmentation you can build on top of it is correspondingly shallower.
What about SMS?
Klaviyo's SMS shares the same profile, segments and flows as email, so a single flow can branch across channels — that is the main argument for it. Mailchimp's SMS offering is more limited and available in fewer regions. SMS is billed per message on top of the email plan — about $0.01 per US message plus carrier fees on Klaviyo's current price list. If cross-channel lifecycle marketing is the plan, Klaviyo is the more coherent product.
